The Photoshoot
On September 7, magic took place at Amy Rose Productions where twelve flatties met each other, instantly bonded, and supported each other through a day that was so much more than a photoshoot.
It all started the night before at a pre-shoot meetup at the studio. Most of us meeting for the first time, a few were reconnecting, but a family formed in an instant—bonded by scars and all the ways we are, Still.
There were some profound firsts that occurred. Someone’s first flat hug with another flattie. And a first time being topless around others.
The beauty we witnessed throughout the day energized us, connected us and brought tears of gratitude for each other, of joy.
We had an ambitious goal of getting twelve flatties through wardrobe, hair and makeup, their photo sessions and individual interviews all in one day. The entire day went without a hitch thanks to the crew of experts choreographing and executing the day so beautifully.
Supporting this, we also had twenty four truly beautiful people, cast and crew, in the room and palpable love setting the tone. There was complete acceptance and an unconditional holding of each other as we worked with a deeply talented crew to capture images that embody who we are, Still.
The day saw workouts in the hallways, sharing of stories, discovering connections, dancing and singing. There was blowing hair, so much laughter, so many smiles, so many flat hugs.
It saw our creative team doing their exceptional work:
Kristie moving all day long hosting, directing, guiding—in all ways…nonstop.
Stunning wardrobe work by Julie.
Michelle’s hair and makeup gorgeously elevating each flatties look.
Bob in his element photographing each flattie, capturing images that blew us away. We heard more than once, “Oh wow…I can’t believe that’s me!”
Tom working quietly with Bob monitoring shots as they were taken, keeping an eye on lighting and exposure, and managing the multitude of shots taken.
Mark working on set making it ready for each flattie and providing direction.
Cassie was like a breeze quietly moving throughout the studio constantly photographing the beauty happening off set.
Hannah did double time with hospitality and helping on set—on hand ready to do anything anyone needed.
Nora spent the entire day interviewing each flattie to learn about their incredible stories.
Collectively, we whole heartedly cheered each other on in awe of what was happening before our eyes. All of it unfolding in a light filled space that felt like home for 36 hours.
A reflection on the day, from Lisa
The day after the shoot I was a sobbing, love filled, inspired, blown away puddle of mush.
I was exhausted but also so energized and overwhelmed with gratitude for a group of flattie’s who trusted me and believed in this whim of mine. They are the heart of this project.
I am overwhelmed with gratitude for Still’s creative team—their incredible talent [I don’t have the words to describe the breadth and enormity of the talent present in that studio], their willingness to be part of Still, and the profound magic they created.
Through garments, brush strokes, words, photography, and incredible authenticity and positivity, we created images that exemplify our truth. And it was healing, and inspiring, and motivating. And it left us forever changed.
THANK YOU, all of you, for your yeses that enabled this.
While the shoot was a huge milestone in this project, it’s really just the beginning.
These photos, paired with copy that’s being written, will be featured in a publication poster show we’re designing so we can share and spread the message of this work…
That flat is beautiful.
How it has empowered us to live our lives fully and boldly.
How we who choose to go flat are still beYOUtiful, still fierce, still resilient, still living, still sexy, still stylin’, still in process, still fucking going. That it’s still my body, I’m still me, and I am stronger still.
That a lack of breasts does not diminish us.
That we are—STILL.
